I recently read Cobalt Red, a non-fiction book by Siddharth Kara, an author and activist on modern-day slavery, on the artisanal mining (ASM) situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). ASM is basically small-scale, informal employment where individuals go on their own to mine for product.
What Kara discovered was heartbreaking.
