While Japan’s GDP per capita on a purchase-power parity basis is still respectable, it has been a pretty stagnant 35 years. Still well above developing economies like China and India, Japan now lags well behind the US (dropping from 81% of the US down to 64%) and has actually been passed by neighbor South Korea.
